Dress Shopping, Day One:
Mom and I head to David's Bridal, not necessarily planning to get my dress there, but they have a large selection of types of dresses. My plan: go in and try on a bunch of dresses and see what I like and what looks good on. So we drive all the way up to Lynnwood, get there, pick out a bunch of dresses 10+, then I stroll over to an otherwise unoccupied sales lady and tell her I would like a dressing room to try on dresses, she says "well, have you filled out the paperwork?" Paperwork? Just to try on dresses? So I walk up to the front of the store and fill out "paperwork," also known as "Give us your name and address and email address so we can spam you up the yingyang and sell your address to all of the other wedding related businesses ever in existence." I gave them my mom's address
) (with my mom's permission, of course). Then the 5'1" size 0 on a fat day sales assistant takes me back to the dressing rooms and gets me the slip/ petticoat to wear and a strapless bra and says that "we''ll start with three" and later says "you know, it's better not to try on too many." Which, although she was generally very nice, I took to mean, "please don't make me help you try on every dress in the store." To which, I mentally replied "if it takes trying on on every dress in the store to find one I really like, then that's what I'm going to do." I tried on a total of about 12 dresses, narrowed it down to two I could stand, but overall was not thrilled with the options.
Dress Shopping, Day Two:
Bellevue Bridal Boutique (BBB) requires appointments to try dresses on if you go in there on the weekends. We went on Saturday, more just to see if they had anything worth making an appointment over, then my mom (insert eye roll here) kind of gently pushed the sales assistant into letting me try on some dresses anyway. When I got a chance, I let the sales person know that I understood she was making an exception and if she needed to go help someone else or let someone else use the dressing room, I understood, she said it was fine, apparently they had a cancelation. I tried on about 6-7 dresses and found 3 I really liked. (Yay!)
So, there's one more bridal shop I want to go check out tomorrow, and then we'll probably go back to BBB and try on the three I liked (and possible more, we'll see). There was one that my mom really, really likes and I'm close to liking it that much except I would prefer it in a taffeta, instead of the organza overlay-- you'd have to see it to see what I mean. I need to order a dress by the end of the week in order to have it in time for all the alterations.
Undergarment Shopping (in which I take the time to wallow in self pity):
Forgive my wallowing for a minute, but, it is hard enough to try and find a nice gown in my size (but they are out there), but there are plenty of women my size and larger that don't also have huge breasts that make finding a strapless bra almost impossible. PLUS, I have big feet (size 11.5- 12), so finding shoes to go with the dress is also going to be super fun. Anyway, even at David's Bridal, the largest strapless contraption they had was only a DD (I could actually hear my breasts giggling at the thought that a DD was going to try and contain them). Last night I went on the internets and fruitlessly searched for something in my size and was unable to find anything above a DD. Today, my mom and I headed to Bellevue Square and started at Macy's, who were no help whatsoever, stopped in at Lane Bryant (because they carry larger size women's bras and because they are located right outside Macy's) who were *more* helpful (they had a couple in my size, but the garment didn't come down far enough and... well... was not flattering, let's just say) and finally ended up at Nordstrom, who were the most helpful. What it came down to, even at Nordstrom, was "we don't carry your size in a strapless bustier, but we can call the Nordstrom in your hometown and have them special order it from a catalog, it should take about 4 weeks to arrive." So I looked at the catalog, picked out what I wanted, they called the Nordstrom in SF and wrote all info down for me. Here's the problem, waiting 4 weeks for a garment that might not even fit is crazy. I appreciate all the hard work the ladies at Nordstrom did, but I went back to my mom's and looked up the same brand on the internet and found a place that could ship in 5 days. I feel bad, but I can't wait the 4 weeks.
Anyway, the brand, for any of you larger chested ladies, is Goddess Bras. They're expensive, but I don't really have much choice (and this is for my wedding, so I'm willing to spend a bit more for something pretty).
